Massive Attack – Protection

Massive Attack – Protection

£28.49

Protection, released on 26th September 1994, is the second studio album by Massive Attack, emerged under Wild Bunch Records and Circa. DJ Mad Professor later remixed it in 1995 as ‘No Protection.’

The album, much like their previous works, defies genres, spanning from R&B (‘Protection’ and ‘Sly’) to hip hop/rap (‘Karmacoma’ and ‘Eurochild’) and delving into reggae-infused synth-pop (‘Spying Glass’) and classical-inspired electronica (‘Weather Storm’ and ‘Heat Miser’).

Structurally akin to ‘Blue Lines,’ it mirrors the album cover’s font and design while referencing its predecessor’s artwork, depicting a futuristic, indestructible wall against a partially burned backdrop—a nod to the past’s ‘flammable gas’ ignited. Tricky reprises his role, contributing rap vocals to ‘Karmacoma’ and ‘Eurochild,’ with notable samples enriching these tracks.
