Songs of Faith and Devotion is Depeche Mode’s eighth studio album, showcasing a darker, rock-oriented sound influenced by grunge and alternative rock. A major departure from the electronic feel of Violator (1990), it debuted at #1 in both the UK and US charts, a first for the band.
Supported by the massive 14-month Devotional Tour, the album features some of their most intense and emotional work. However, the recording and tour strained the band, leading to Alan Wilder’s departure in 1995, making this the final album recorded as a quartet. Despite challenges, Songs of Faith and Devotion remains a defining moment in Depeche Mode‘s evolution.
